Russian Drone Hits NATO Territory, Romania Weighs Emergency Alliance Response

A major new flashpoint has emerged in Eastern Europe after Romania accused Russia of a dangerous escalation following a drone strike that hit a residential apartment building in the border city of Galați, injuring civilians. Romanian officials say the drone entered Romanian airspace before crashing into the building, while NATO leaders have vowed to defend alliance territory and are closely monitoring the situation. Romania is reportedly considering consultations under NATO's Article 4 mechanism, which allows members to request urgent talks when national security is threatened.

The incident marks one of the most serious spillovers of the Ukraine war into NATO territory so far. Romanian authorities scrambled military aircraft during the overnight attack and described the event as a grave security threat. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the alliance stands ready to defend every inch of its territory.

At the same time, Ukraine says Russian forces also struck a Turkish-owned cargo vessel in the Black Sea, raising fears that commercial shipping routes are becoming increasingly vulnerable as the conflict widens. Turkish officials have urged all sides to avoid actions that could trigger a broader regional crisis.
