MOSCOW / KYIV: Vladimir Putin has announced a temporary two-day ceasefire in the war with Ukraine, set to take place on Friday and Saturday to mark World War II Victory Day.
According to a statement from Russia’s Defense Ministry, the pause in fighting is intended to coincide with national commemorations. However, Ukrainian officials have not immediately confirmed whether they will fully adhere to the proposed ceasefire.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said discussions between Russia and the United States regarding a truce had not been formally communicated to Kyiv, emphasizing the need for Ukraine’s direct involvement in any agreement.
Tensions Over Previous Violations
Both sides have accused each other of breaching earlier ceasefire agreements. Ukrainian authorities have previously alleged attacks on infrastructure during truce periods, while Russia has made similar claims against Ukrainian forces.
Warnings and Conditions
Russia’s Defense Ministry warned that any violations could prompt a response, while also urging safety precautions in affected areas.
Zelenskyy indicated that Ukraine may consider reciprocal measures, but stressed that a broader and lasting peace would require concrete steps from Moscow.
Symbolic Timing
The announcement comes ahead of Victory Day celebrations, a significant event in Russia marking the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.
