Millions of Americans are moving ahead with Memorial Day weekend travel plans despite soaring fuel prices, expensive groceries, flight disruptions, and severe weather threats across parts of the country.
According to AAA, gas prices in all 50 states have climbed above $4 per gallon for the first time since 2022, largely driven by instability linked to the ongoing Iran conflict and pressure on global energy markets.
Millions Still Expected to Travel
AAA estimates:
- 39.1 million Americans will travel by road this weekend
- 3.66 million passengers are expected to fly domestically
Officials say the numbers slightly exceed last year’s Memorial Day travel totals despite rising costs.
LaGuardia Airport Faces Major Disruptions
Travel headaches are intensifying at LaGuardia Airport after a sinkhole was discovered on one of the airport’s two main runways.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey confirmed Runway 4/22 remains closed after engineering crews found additional “areas of concern” during radar inspections.
The runway closure could lead to:
- Flight delays
- Cancellations
- Congestion across Northeast air travel routes
Officials say repairs are continuing, but no full reopening timeline has been confirmed.
Severe Weather Threats Add More Pressure
Meteorologists are also warning of severe weather risks in several US regions during the holiday weekend, potentially affecting:
- Road travel
- Airport operations
- Outdoor Memorial Day events
Travel experts are urging Americans to:
- Leave earlier than planned
- Monitor airline updates
- Prepare for heavy highway congestion
- Expect higher fuel and food costs
Iran Conflict Affecting US Consumers
Analysts say the ongoing tensions involving Iran and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz continue to pressure global oil supplies, contributing to rising gasoline prices across the US.
The holiday weekend is becoming an early test of how global geopolitical tensions may affect the American summer travel season.
