ROME: Giorgia Meloni has warned about the growing danger of artificial intelligence deepfakes after fake AI-generated images of her circulated online and triggered political controversy in Italy.

Meloni said several manipulated photos created using artificial intelligence were falsely presented as real images by political opponents on social media platforms.

One viral image appeared to show the Italian prime minister sitting on a bed wearing underwear, alongside comments criticizing the image as inappropriate for a national leader.

Despite the backlash, Meloni responded sarcastically, joking that the people behind the fake images had “improved” her appearance.

However, she stressed that the issue is far more serious than personal attacks and warned that deepfake technology can easily deceive and manipulate the public.

“Deepfakes are a dangerous tool because they can deceive, manipulate, and strike anyone,” Meloni said.

She added that while she is capable of publicly defending herself, many ordinary people targeted by fake AI content may not be able to do the same.

The Italian prime minister also urged people to carefully verify online content before believing or sharing it across social media.

“Verify before believing, and think before sharing,” she warned.

The controversy has once again highlighted growing global fears over artificial intelligence misuse, misinformation and digitally manipulated images targeting politicians, celebrities and ordinary citizens.

Meloni previously launched a libel lawsuit two years ago against a man accused of creating pornographic deepfake images using her face and publishing them online. The legal case remains ongoing in Italy.

Experts worldwide continue warning that AI-generated fake videos and images are becoming increasingly realistic and could be used to spread political propaganda, online harassment and misinformation during major global events.
