America’s Lunar Ambitions Take Hit After Blue Origin Rocket Erupts in Flame
CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida — One of the most ambitious rockets in America’s growing space program exploded into a massive fireball during a late-night test, delivering a major setback to Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin and raising fresh questions about the future of U.S. lunar missions.
The explosion occurred during a static “hot-fire” engine test of Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket at Cape Canaveral. Video from the scene showed the giant rocket erupting in flames moments after ignition, sending a towering plume of fire and smoke into the Florida night sky. Witnesses reported seeing the glow from miles away while nearby homes felt the shockwave.
No injuries were reported, and Blue Origin confirmed that all personnel were safely accounted for. The company described the incident as an “anomaly” and said an investigation is underway.
