Donald Trump has announced that a United States delegation will travel to Islamabad on Monday for a potential new round of talks with Iran, aimed at ending the ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel, and Tehran.

In a statement posted on social media, Trump said the US is prepared to continue diplomatic efforts but warned of serious consequences if Iran refuses to engage.

However, Iran has rejected participation in the proposed talks, citing the ongoing US naval blockade as a major obstacle. Iranian officials stated that negotiations cannot proceed “as long as there is a blockade on Iranian ports.”

Last week’s discussions in Islamabad, led by JD Vance, ended without any agreement, though both sides described the talks as constructive.

Blockade and Strait tensions escalate

Tensions have intensified following Iran’s move to close the Strait of Hormuz once again, shortly after it had been reopened. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps navy said the closure would remain in place until the United States lifts its blockade.

The US military confirmed that it has turned back at least 23 vessels attempting to approach Iranian waters since the enforcement of the blockade began.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry described the US action as “unlawful and criminal”, warning that it violates the ceasefire and amounts to collective punishment.

Trump issues strong warning

President Trump issued a stern warning to Tehran, stating that Washington has offered a “fair and reasonable deal,” but failure to accept it could result in severe consequences.

He indicated that the US could target key infrastructure in Iran if diplomatic efforts collapse.

Negotiations still far from conclusion

Despite the rising tensions, officials say diplomatic channels remain open. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh noted that while some progress was made in earlier talks, major disagreements remain, particularly over Iran’s nuclear programme and the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf also said that “many gaps remain”, adding that both sides are still far from reaching a final agreement.

Pakistan continues mediation efforts

Pakistan is playing a central role in facilitating dialogue between the two sides. Ishaq Dar held a telephone conversation with Abbas Araghchi, emphasizing the need for continued engagement to resolve the crisis.

Further high-level contacts between Iranian and Pakistani leadership are expected as diplomatic efforts continue.
