A French soldier serving with the United Nations peacekeeping mission (UNIFIL) has been killed and three others wounded in an attack in southern Lebanon, officials confirmed.

The incident occurred in the village of Ghandouriyeh, where UNIFIL reported that three peacekeepers were injured — two of them seriously. Initial assessments suggest the attack was carried out by non-state actors, with suspicion falling on Hezbollah, though an investigation is ongoing.

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the incident as an “unacceptable attack” during calls with Lebanese leadership, urging authorities to take action against those responsible.

However, Hezbollah has denied any involvement, calling for caution and rejecting the accusations.

French officials said the patrol was ambushed while attempting to secure access to an isolated UN position. The soldier was reportedly killed by direct small-arms fire.

Lebanon’s army has also condemned the attack and launched its own investigation into the incident.
