Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif outlines Pakistan’s healthcare priorities whilemarking World Health Day.
ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its healthcare system, marking World Health Day with a renewed focus on policy reform and public well-being.
In an official message, the prime minister highlighted the global theme “Together for Health – Stand with Science,” emphasizing the importance of applying scientific advancements to improve public health outcomes.
He stated that Pakistan is gradually transitioning towards a healthcare model that prioritizes prevention and health promotion, rather than relying solely on treatment-based approaches. Primary healthcare, he noted, remains central to achieving universal health coverage.
The prime minister underscored that healthcare is not only a social priority but also a key factor in economic stability and national development. He added that the government is working to build a resilient and inclusive healthcare system through innovation and coordinated efforts.
He also pointed to ongoing initiatives, including the expansion of essential health services across districts under national programs, aimed at ensuring access to quality care for all citizens.
Highlighting the role of technology, the prime minister said digital health systems, including telemedicine and integrated data platforms, will form a major component of the upcoming National Health and Population Policy (2026–2035).
He further stressed the importance of addressing broader factors such as population growth, sanitation, and nutrition, noting that a multi-sector approach is being adopted to tackle these challenges.
The government, he added, is also focusing on improving health financing and expanding financial protection mechanisms to reduce the economic burden of medical expenses on citizens.
The prime minister concluded by calling for continued collaboration between federal and provincial authorities, development partners, and the private sector to build a stronger and healthier Pakistan.
