Joy turns to grief as families face destruction across southern Lebanon

Lebanese families began returning to their homes in the south following a temporary ceasefire with Israel, but scenes of celebration were quickly overshadowed by the devastation left behind by weeks of conflict.

In Qasmiyeh, children were seen waving victory signs from cars as they crossed a makeshift bridge over the Litani River, built overnight after the original bridge was destroyed during the fighting.

The 10-day truce has offered a brief pause in hostilities, allowing displaced residents to go back and assess the condition of their homes. However, the reality on the ground remains harsh, with widespread destruction of villages and city areas.

Nearly a quarter of Lebanon’s population had been forced to flee during the six-week conflict, as Israeli military operations targeted areas linked to Hezbollah. Israel maintains that its campaign was aimed at protecting its citizens from threats posed by the Iran-backed group.

Despite the ceasefire, many families are unable to return, either because their homes have been completely destroyed or because their areas remain under military control.

For those who have returned, the emotional moment is mixed with shock and uncertainty, as they face the challenge of rebuilding their lives. Many are now calling for a permanent end to conflict and lasting peace in the region.
