Doug Ford, the Premier of Ontario, is facing criticism after his government purchased a pre-owned private jet worth C$28.9 million ($21 million). The aircraft, a Bombardier Challenger 650 built in 2016, will be used for official government travel, including trips to the United States to address trade issues such as tariffs.

The decision has sparked backlash from opposition leaders, who called the move “out of touch” at a time when many people are struggling financially. Ontario NDP leader Marit Stiles criticized the purchase, saying that people are finding it difficult to pay rent and afford groceries, and questioned the timing of buying a private jet.

“He should be flying economy like the rest of us,” she said.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation also urged the government to reverse the decision and continue using commercial flights.

In response, Ford’s office said the plane will be used strictly for government business to improve efficiency in official travel. The controversy has raised concerns about government spending during a period of economic pressure on citizens.
