US Resumes Intelligence Sharing With Ukraine After Pause, Zelenskyy Says, as Satellite Restrictions Remain

KYIV, Ukraine— The United States has resumed sharing critical intelligence with Ukraine to help detect incoming Russian ballistic missiles after a temporary interruption, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday, restoring a vital component of Kyiv's air defence capabilities amid growing disagreements with Washington over the war.

Zelenskyy told NBC News' Meet the Press that Ukraine had gone three days without receiving American intelligence warnings during Russian ballistic missile attacks. He said the information flow had since been restored, although restrictions affecting Ukraine's access to a separate U.S.-provided satellite communications system remained a concern.

The interruption highlighted Ukraine's dependence on American intelligence capabilities to identify and track fast-moving Russian missiles. Such information gives Ukrainian forces additional time to assess incoming threats, activate air defence systems and issue warnings to civilians in cities repeatedly targeted by Russian attacks.

The Ukrainian president said the intelligence-sharing arrangement was functioning again and expressed appreciation for Washington's decision to restore the service. His remarks followed several days of uncertainty over whether the United States had reduced its military support as tensions between the two governments intensified.

President Donald Trump had said earlier in the week that Washington was continuing to share intelligence with Ukraine. Ukrainian officials, however, reported that several Russian missile attacks had occurred without the advance warnings they normally received from American partners.

The conflicting accounts raised questions about the continuity of U.S. military assistance and the distinction between intelligence-sharing arrangements that remained operational and specific warning capabilities that may have been interrupted.

The issue became particularly urgent after Russian missile strikes on Kyiv earlier this month. Ukrainian officials reported that warning systems had not provided the expected advance notice before some attacks, prompting military authorities to seek clarification from their American counterparts.

The restoration comes during a period of increasingly strained relations between Trump and Zelenskyy. Washington has criticised Ukrainian strikes against Russian energy infrastructure, while Kyiv maintains that such operations are part of its response to continued Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and energy facilities.

Trump has also taken steps to ease certain Russia-related economic restrictions, drawing objections from the Ukrainian government. Zelenskyy has argued that reducing economic pressure on Moscow could weaken efforts to bring the war to an end.

The disagreement has added uncertainty to the future of American assistance, which remains important to Ukraine's ability to defend its territory and protect civilian infrastructure. U.S. intelligence, military equipment and communications technology have played significant roles in Ukrainian operations since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Separately, Zelenskyy said restrictions affecting Starshield, the military communications service associated with SpaceX's Starlink technology, had not been fully resolved. The system supports Ukrainian military communications and operations, making its availability another sensitive issue in relations between Kyiv and Washington.

Reuters reported earlier this week, citing U.S. and Western officials, that an instruction to limit the Starshield service originated within the White House. The service disruption has raised concerns about the vulnerability of military systems that depend on technology and support controlled by foreign partners.

Zelenskyy did not establish who had personally ordered the restrictions. The intelligence-sharing restoration and the continuing Starshield limitations are separate developments, and the resumption of missile warnings does not mean all American technological support has returned to previous levels.

Despite the disagreements, the Ukrainian president expressed willingness to continue talks with Washington and indicated that further discussions could take place in the coming days.

The latest developments also coincide with continued Russian strikes on Ukrainian territory and Ukrainian attacks against energy and military-related facilities inside Russia. Both countries have intensified operations while diplomatic efforts to secure an end to the conflict remain uncertain.

For Ukraine, the immediate significance of the restored intelligence flow lies in its ability to respond to Russian ballistic missile threats. The broader question is whether Washington and Kyiv can maintain dependable military cooperation while their differences over sanctions, battlefield strategy and negotiations with Moscow remain unresolved.
