Ukraine PM Svyrydenko resigns as Zelenskyy launches major wartime government reshuffle

By SCN NEWS DESK

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko has stepped down after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a sweeping government reshuffle designed to refresh Kyiv’s leadership while the country remains locked in war with Russia.

Svyrydenko, who became prime minister in July 2025, confirmed her departure on Sunday and said she remained proud of having led the government during one of the most difficult periods in Ukraine’s modern history.

Her resignation triggers the departure of the entire cabinet under Ukrainian law, although ministers are expected to continue serving in an acting capacity until parliament approves a new government. Zelenskyy had not immediately named a confirmed successor.

Zelenskyy seeks a government “reset”

Announcing the shake-up, Zelenskyy said Ukraine needed to renew its political strategy and assign experienced officials to specific foreign-policy and national-security priorities.

The president indicated that senior figures could be given responsibility for strengthening relations with the United States, Europe, China and countries in the Middle East. Further changes may also be made within Ukraine’s law-enforcement leadership.

The reshuffle is expected to place greater emphasis on defence cooperation, energy security, European Union integration, reconstruction and management of regions close to the front line.

The overhaul represents Ukraine’s fourth major government reorganisation since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. It comes as Kyiv faces continued Russian missile and drone attacks, pressure on the battlefield and growing demands to secure additional Western military assistance.

Svyrydenko’s rapid rise — and sudden exit

Svyrydenko was elevated to the premiership in July 2025 after previously serving as economy minister and first deputy prime minister.

She had gained international prominence through her role in economic negotiations with Western partners, including discussions surrounding a strategic minerals agreement with the United States.

Her departure after roughly one year in office underlines the speed with which Zelenskyy is reorganising his wartime administration. Reports suggest she could be reassigned to a diplomatic position, potentially involving relations with a major international partner, although no new role has been officially confirmed.

Who could become the next prime minister?

Several senior Ukrainian officials have emerged in political discussions as possible candidates to lead the next government.

They include former prime minister and current defence official Denys Shmyhal, Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and Naftogaz chief executive Serhiy Koretskyi.

Koretskyi has been described in some reports as a leading contender, but Zelenskyy has not publicly confirmed a nominee. Any new prime minister must be approved by Ukraine’s parliament, where the president’s political allies retain significant influence.

Corruption scandal increases political pressure

The government reset also comes amid scrutiny surrounding a major corruption investigation known as the “Midas case.”

The case reportedly concerns allegations of a $100 million kickback scheme involving the state nuclear-energy company Energoatom. Several figures previously close to Zelenskyy have been linked to the investigation, although they have denied wrongdoing.

Zelenskyy has not publicly presented the corruption case as the sole reason for the reshuffle. However, its timing increases pressure on his administration to demonstrate accountability and restore public confidence while continuing to manage the war.

Ukraine reshuffles leadership at a critical moment

The changes arrive as Ukraine attempts to strengthen its air defences, expand domestic weapons production and maintain political support from Washington and European capitals.

Kyiv is also pushing for progress toward European Union membership while seeking long-term security commitments and financing for reconstruction.

Zelenskyy’s decision therefore appears intended to achieve more than a change of personalities. The president is attempting to build a government capable of managing several overlapping challenges: fighting Russia, confronting corruption, protecting critical infrastructure and maintaining support from increasingly pressured Western allies.

The success of the reshuffle will depend on who is chosen to replace Svyrydenko and whether the new cabinet can deliver visible military, diplomatic and economic results.
