Trump Announces Qatar Meeting; Tehran Says Nothing Planned

WASHINGTON/DOHA — US President Donald Trump has announced that American and Iranian representatives will meet in Qatar on Tuesday, saying Tehran requested fresh talks despite recent military exchanges that have strained an already fragile ceasefire.

Posting on social media, Trump said a meeting would take place in Doha, describing it as a continuation of diplomatic efforts following days of heightened tensions in the Gulf.

However, Iranian officials quickly disputed the announcement.

Iran's Foreign Ministry said its delegation will travel to Qatar to discuss implementation issues related to the existing understanding between the two countries but stressed that no direct negotiations with US officials are planned during the visit.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Iran would not hold negotiation meetings "at any level" with the American side in the coming days, adding that the US delegation's presence in Doha is unrelated to Iran's visit.

The conflicting statements highlight the uncertainty surrounding diplomatic contacts as both countries attempt to preserve a ceasefire that has come under pressure following recent military incidents around the Strait of Hormuz. Despite disagreements over whether direct talks will occur, mediators including Qatar continue efforts to prevent a broader regional escalation.
