The United Kingdom recorded another record-breaking May temperature on Friday as an intense heatwave continued across much of the country, while forecasters warned thunderstorms and travel disruption could soon follow.

The latest heat surge came after what meteorologists described as the warmest May night ever recorded in parts of Britain, with temperatures remaining unusually high overnight and creating uncomfortable conditions in several cities.

Rail operators warned the extreme heat could impact transport services, with at least one train company canceling routes to “help minimise potential disruption” as soaring temperatures raised concerns over railway infrastructure and delays.

Weather experts say the hot and humid conditions are expected to trigger severe thunderstorms over the weekend as cooler air moves into the region. Forecasters warned some areas could experience heavy rain, lightning, strong winds, hail, and localized flooding.

Authorities also renewed water safety warnings after a fourth teenager reportedly died after getting into difficulty in water during the hot weather. Emergency services across the UK have responded to multiple incidents involving people swimming in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs as temperatures climbed.

Officials warned that despite the heat, open water can remain extremely dangerous due to strong currents, sudden depth changes, and cold-water shock.

Health officials advised vulnerable people, including older adults and children, to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight as Britain continues to experience unusually high spring temperatures.
