Trump asks court to pause massive judgment as legal battle over presidential immunity escalates

WASHINGTON : Donald Trump has requested a court stay on the $83.3 million judgment awarded to writer E. Jean Carroll while he prepares to take his presidential immunity fight to the Supreme Court of the United States.

According to a late-night filing submitted to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, Trump’s legal team argued that major constitutional questions surrounding presidential immunity and the federal Westfall Act should be reviewed by the Supreme Court before enforcement of the judgment moves forward.

Trump’s lawyers claim there is a “fair prospect” the Supreme Court could overturn previous rulings tied to the case, warning that allowing the judgment to proceed now could cause “irreparable harm” to the president.

Carroll’s legal team reportedly does not oppose the temporary stay if Trump agrees to increase the financial bond by approximately $7.46 million to cover post-judgment interest.

The legal battle centers around whether Trump’s statements denying Carroll’s accusations during his first presidency should be protected under presidential immunity and the Westfall Act.

Trump’s attorneys argue the law shields federal officials from personal liability for statements made while performing official duties, effectively shifting legal responsibility to the US government itself.

The explosive case has remained one of the most high-profile legal threats surrounding Trump as he continues navigating multiple court battles while seeking another term in the White House.

The latest filing signals the dispute could now head toward a major Supreme Court showdown over the limits of presidential immunity in civil lawsuits.
