Vladimir Putin has vowed retaliation after accusing Ukraine of carrying out a deadly drone strike on a student dormitory in the occupied Luhansk region.

According to Russian officials, the overnight attack in the town of Starobilsk killed at least six people, injured 39 others, and left 15 missing beneath the rubble.

Kremlin-installed authorities released images showing a partially collapsed building as rescue crews searched through debris for survivors.

Putin Blames Ukraine Directly

Speaking during a Kremlin reception Friday, Putin said the attack was carried out in three separate drone waves involving 16 drones.

He insisted there were:

“No military facilities, intelligence service facilities, or related services in the vicinity.”

Putin rejected claims the destruction may have been caused by Russian air defense systems, directly blaming Ukrainian forces for the strike.

Ukraine Says Military Target Was Hit

Ukraine’s military, however, claimed responsibility for striking what it described as the headquarters of Russia’s elite Rubicon drone military unit operating in Starobilsk.

Kyiv argues Russian military assets were being used in the area to coordinate drone warfare operations against Ukrainian forces.

Independent verification of the exact target and circumstances remains difficult, and the BBC said it has not independently confirmed the claims from either side.

Tensions Escalating Again

The incident marks another sharp escalation in the war as both Russia and Ukraine continue launching long-range drone strikes deep behind front lines.

Analysts warn the latest accusations could trigger:

  • Expanded Russian retaliation
  • Increased strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure
  • Further civilian casualties
  • More intense drone warfare across the region

The conflict has increasingly relied on:

  • Drone attacks
  • Missile strikes
  • Electronic warfare systems
  • Long-range precision operations

Humanitarian Concerns Growing

Emergency responders continue searching for survivors in Starobilsk as families await news about missing residents.

The strike also highlights the growing danger to civilians living in contested or occupied territories as the war continues with no major breakthrough in peace negotiations.
