WASHINGTON — Mike Waltz claimed China has distanced itself from Iran following high-level talks between Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping during Trump’s state visit to Beijing.
Speaking on Fox News, Waltz described Beijing’s position after the summit as a major diplomatic victory for Washington, saying China agreed on the importance of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and opposing militarization of the Strait of Hormuz.
“To see the Chinese backing away from Iran after meeting with President Trump was a huge outcome of this summit,” Waltz said.
According to Waltz, both sides agreed that critical international shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz should remain open and not be used for economic pressure or tolling systems that could disrupt global trade and energy supplies.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important maritime routes, carrying a major share of global oil exports. Ongoing tensions linked to Iran have raised fears of wider economic instability and higher fuel prices worldwide.
Trump concluded his three-day Beijing visit on Friday, calling the trip “an amazing period of time” and praising Xi Jinping while highlighting new trade understandings between the two countries.
The summit heavily focused on the Iran conflict, nuclear concerns, energy security, Taiwan tensions, and broader U.S.-China relations as both nations attempt to manage growing geopolitical pressure across multiple regions.
