Jewish Democrats in the United States are increasingly divided over the future of the Democratic Party’s relationship with Israel, with many party members openly criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu while still defending Israel’s right to exist and protect itself.

During recent political conferences and Democratic gatherings, speakers argued that Netanyahu’s long-standing alignment with conservative Republicans has damaged bipartisan support for Israel inside the Democratic Party. Several Democratic strategists and Jewish political activists said criticism of Netanyahu’s government should not automatically be viewed as opposition to Israel itself.

The debate reflects a broader shift inside the Democratic Party, where younger and progressive voters have become increasingly vocal over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and U.S. military support for Israel. Progressive lawmakers including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ro Khanna recently criticized the Democratic National Committee for avoiding discussion of Gaza and Netanyahu in its post-2024 election analysis.

Political organizations such as Democratic Majority for Israel (DMFI) continue pushing for strong U.S.-Israel ties within the Democratic Party, but recent polling and internal party debates show growing discomfort with Netanyahu’s leadership among Democratic voters, especially younger Jewish Americans.

Israeli opposition figures have also warned that Netanyahu’s close relationship with Republican leaders risks turning support for Israel into a partisan issue in Washington. Former Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid previously criticized Netanyahu for alienating Democrats and tying Israel too closely to conservative American politics.

Meanwhile, Israeli politics itself remains deeply polarized as Netanyahu faces pressure from opposition groups, anti-government protest movements and coalition instability following months of domestic unrest and international criticism over the Gaza war.

Despite growing criticism of Netanyahu, many Jewish Democrats at recent events stressed that supporting Israel and criticizing its government are not mutually exclusive positions. Speakers argued there is still broad support for Israel’s security among Democrats even as frustration with Netanyahu’s leadership continues to grow.
