Driver arrested after vehicle ploughs into crowded city centre, investigation underway
LEIPZIG: Two people were killed and several others injured after a car drove into a crowd in the eastern Germany city of Leipzig, authorities confirmed.
Police said a vehicle entered a busy pedestrian shopping area from a central square, striking multiple people in what officials described as a deliberate act. The victims were identified as a 63-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man.
At least three individuals sustained serious injuries, while more than 20 people were reported affected in total. Emergency services responded quickly, and the injured were taken for medical treatment.
A 33-year-old suspect has been arrested at the scene and is under investigation on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Authorities said the motive remains unclear, with no immediate indication of political or religious involvement.
City officials described the incident as a tragic and shocking event, as the attack occurred in a busy area near major landmarks, including a central church and university buildings.
