Millions of Americans are expected to travel across the United States this holiday weekend despite a noticeable rise in gasoline and airfare prices, according to transportation analysts and travel industry data.
Travel experts say strong consumer demand, seasonal tourism and continued interest in domestic vacations are pushing record numbers of travelers onto roads and into airports even as travel costs climb nationwide.
According to the American Automobile Association, more than 43 million Americans are projected to travel during the extended holiday period, with road trips remaining the most popular option despite higher fuel prices.
AAA reported that average US gasoline prices recently moved higher due to increased seasonal demand and global oil market uncertainty linked to tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and Middle East supply concerns.
Airfare prices have also risen sharply compared with earlier months, according to travel booking platforms and airline industry reports. Analysts say strong summer demand, higher fuel costs and limited seat availability are contributing to the increase.
Despite the added expense, airports across major US cities are experiencing heavy passenger traffic as families continue prioritizing vacations and holiday travel after years of economic uncertainty and pandemic disruptions.
The Transportation Security Administration said it expects some of the busiest airport screening days of the year during the holiday weekend, urging travelers to arrive early because of increased congestion.
Industry experts say many Americans appear willing to absorb higher travel costs as strong employment levels and consumer spending continue supporting tourism activity across the country.
However, economists warn that persistently rising fuel and transportation costs could place additional pressure on household budgets during the busy summer travel season.
