SCN | International Desk | STRAIT OF HORMUZ:

Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply after US President Donald Trump announced a naval blockade targeting Iranian-linked shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a move that has triggered a strong warning from Iran’s military.

The US military confirmed that the operation will begin Monday at 14:00 GMT, stating that vessels traveling to or from Iranian ports will be targeted, while other international ships will be allowed safe passage.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, however, insisted that the strait remains open for civilian navigation and warned that any foreign military presence would face a “severe” response.

Confusion Over US Strategy

Conflicting statements from Washington have created uncertainty over the scope of the blockade.

While Trump suggested that all vessels entering or leaving the strait could be intercepted, US Central Command (CENTCOM) clarified that the action would be limited to ships linked to Iran.

Trump had also warned that ships paying tolls to Iran would not be granted safe passage, but CENTCOM has not addressed this aspect in its operational details.

Additionally, Trump initially indicated the blockade would take effect immediately, whereas the military set a specific start time for Monday.

Legal and Strategic Questions Raised

The move has sparked concerns among analysts, with questions emerging over whether the United States has the legal authority to enforce a blockade on international commercial vessels in global waters.

Experts also warn that such actions could increase the risk of military escalation in an already volatile region.

Global Trade at Risk

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, and any disruption could have significant consequences for global energy markets.

The situation is further complicated by China’s involvement, as Beijing remains Iran’s largest trading partner. Any restriction on Iranian shipping could directly impact Chinese trade flows and heighten geopolitical tensions.

Escalation After Failed Talks

The development follows the collapse of recent US-Iran peace talks in Pakistan, signaling a shift from diplomacy to heightened military pressure.

With both sides maintaining firm positions, the situation continues to evolve, raising concerns of a broader regional conflict.
