Pope Leo Slams ‘Neocolonial’ Conflicts After Trump Criticism During Africa Tour

ALGIERS: Pope Leo on Monday strongly criticised what he described as “neocolonial” conflicts and violations of international law, delivering a powerful message during his Africa tour — just hours after facing criticism from Donald Trump.

Addressing political leaders in Algeria, the first stop of his multi-nation visit, the pope emphasised the urgent need for peace and global responsibility.

“The future belongs to those who are not blinded by power or wealth,” Pope Leo said. “Africa knows all too well that domination destroys societies and the world.”

Although he did not name specific countries, the pontiff has recently emerged as a vocal critic of global conflicts, particularly tensions surrounding the Iran war, and has repeatedly condemned what he called the “madness of war.”

His remarks come shortly after Donald Trump publicly criticised him, calling the pope “terrible” — comments that sparked backlash among religious communities.

Despite the criticism, Pope Leo made it clear he would continue his stance.

“I don’t want to get into a debate,” he said. “I will continue to speak out loudly against war, promoting peace, dialogue, and multilateral relationships.”
