UNITED NATIONS / GLOBAL DESK — Sky Global News

Russia and China have vetoed a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution aimed at protecting commercial shipping in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, escalating global tensions and deepening fears of an energy crisis.

The draft resolution, proposed by Bahrain, received strong support from 11 out of 15 UNSC members, while two countries abstained. However, the vetoes by Russia and China blocked its adoption, with both nations arguing that the proposal was biased against Iran.

🛢️ STRAIT OF HORMUZ CRISIS

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route through which nearly 20% of the world’s oil and gas shipments previously passed, has effectively come to a standstill.

Iran has threatened to target vessels following the conflict involving the United States and Israel, leading to a near-total disruption of shipping.

  • 📦 Supply chain disruptions increasing
  • 💸 Economic pressure mounting globally

🇺🇸 US REACTION

The United States strongly condemned the vetoes.

US Ambassador Mike Waltz called the move:

“A new low… They are holding the global economy at gunpoint.”

He also warned that the blockade is preventing humanitarian aid from reaching crisis-hit regions including Congo, Sudan, and Gaza.

🇫🇷 FRANCE RESPONSE

France also criticized the decision, stating the resolution was designed purely for defensive measures to ensure safe navigation without escalating conflict.

🇷🇺🇨🇳 RUSSIA & CHINA POSITION

  • China’s envoy Fu Cong said the resolution would send the wrong message amid rising tensions
  • Russia’s envoy Vasily Nebenzya confirmed an alternative proposal is being prepared

Both countries maintained the draft unfairly targeted Iran.

🇮🇷 IRAN RESPONSE

Iran’s UN ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani praised the veto, stating:

“This prevented the Security Council from being misused to legitimise aggression.”
