Mark Carney has made it clear that Canada will not allow the United States to dictate the terms of ongoing trade negotiations, as tensions between the two sides continue to rise.

Speaking to reporters, Carney said both countries are aware of key trade concerns and are working through them with counter-proposals, signaling that negotiations remain active but complex.

The comments come amid growing friction over several issues, including restrictions on U.S. liquor sales in Canada, environmental policies, and market access concerns affecting American businesses.

Meanwhile, U.S. officials have publicly criticized Canadian trade practices. During a Senate hearing, Howard Lutnick strongly objected to Canadian policies, describing them as unfair to American interests.

The situation intensified following a heated exchange with U.S. lawmakers, who also raised concerns about declining cross-border tourism and the broader impact of political rhetoric on economic ties.

Trade tensions have also extended to tariffs and supply chains, with U.S. officials urging domestic production while Canadian leaders emphasize the importance of balanced and fair agreements.

In response, Canada has introduced a new advisory group ahead of formal negotiations expected later this year, aiming to strengthen its strategy and engage more effectively with both domestic and international stakeholders.

Despite ongoing disagreements, both sides continue discussions, with officials acknowledging that previous negotiations had come close to a breakthrough before stalling.

The evolving dispute highlights the challenges of maintaining strong economic ties between two major trading partners, as both nations navigate competing interests and political pressures.
