Trump-Field Marshal Asim Munir meeting a ‘welcome development’, former foreign secretary
WEB DESK: Former Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry has termed the recent meeting between US President Donald Trump and Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir as a “welcome development,” stating that it signals good news for Pakistan.
Speaking on HUM News morning show Subah Se Agay, Chaudhry emphasised the importance of maintaining strong Pakistan-US relations while balancing ties with China. “Pakistan has always desired good relations with America, and this high-level meeting is a positive step,” he said.
Chaudhry clarified that Pakistan does not want the US and China to be pitted against each other in strategic competition. “Our close ties with China are well-established, but it is equally important to engage with the US for regional stability,” he added.
Reflecting on history, the former diplomat noted that the US had played a “critical role” in de-escalating tensions between Pakistan and India during past conflicts. He suggested that improved Pakistan-US relations would likely please Islamabad and Tehran while causing unease in New Delhi.
“Islamabad is happy, Delhi is worried,” Chaudhry remarked. “Even Iran would welcome stronger Pakistan-US ties because it knows Pakistan will advocate for Iran’s interests in discussions with Washington.”
His comments come amid shifting geopolitical dynamics in the region, with Pakistan navigating its strategic partnerships with both global powers.
Following the meeting between Trump and Field Marshal Munir, the latter extended a formal invitation to the former on behalf of the Government of Pakistan.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Representative for the Middle East Steven Witkoff were also present during the meeting, along with Interior Minister of Pakistan Mohsin Naqvi and Director General and National Security Adviser ISI Asim Malik.
Field Marshal thanked President Trump for playing a positive and fruitful role in the Pakistan-India ceasefire. He also praised President Trump’s leadership skills in understanding the many challenges facing the world and dealing with them.
President Trump appreciated the ongoing cooperation between Pakistan and the US against terrorism. He also lauded Pakistan’s efforts to establish peace in the region.
