Rain spell eases water shortage fears in twin cities
ISLAMABAD: After the recent rains, the water level situation in the Khanpur and Rawal dams has improved considerably, eliminating fears of water shortage in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
Due to the dry spell, the water level in both the dams had dropped considerably.
According to MD WASA Mohammad Saleem, due to recent rains, the level of water in the dams has increased by one foot each.
According to the MD WASA, the water storage capacity of Khanpur Dam is 1,982 feet, while the current water level is 1,920 feet.
The storage capacity of Rawal Dam is 1,752 feet, and the current water level there is 1,736 feet.
The water level in the dams will further improve as more rains have been forecasted in the coming days. There is also a possibility that the current rain spells will have a positive impact on underground water levels as well.
Earlier, the prolonged dry spell had caused the water level in Khanpur Dam to fall sharply to just 11 feet, sparking fears of a looming water shortage crisis in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
Located near the Potohar Plateau and the village of Khanpur in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the dam lies about 40km from Islamabad and 15km from Haripur. It supplies domestic water to Rawalpindi and Islamabad, and also meets the needs of surrounding agricultural and industrial zones.
