Resolution proposed to introduce federal-style parliamentary system in Punjab

The resolution further states only 11 countries in the world have a population greater than Punjab

A resolution seeking the introduction of a federal-style parliamentary system in Punjab has been drafted and is set to be presented in the Punjab Assembly today.

The resolution calls for the establishment of a Senate-like upper house in Punjab, similar to the federal structure. It has been prepared by PML-N’s Samiullah, PPP’s Ali Haider, and other assembly members.

According to official statistics, Punjab has a population of 124 million, making it larger than 171 countries worldwide. The resolution further states that only 11 countries in the world have a population greater than Punjab’s.

The resolution emphasizes the need for representation from all sectors of society and experts in the province’s governance and decision-making processes. However, the current constitutional framework does not accommodate such a system.

The resolution urges the federal government to amend the Constitution to introduce a bicameral system in Punjab. It proposes the establishment of a Punjab Council, modeled after an upper house, alongside the Punjab Assembly’s lower house. The council would include nominated or elected representatives from various fields.
