First major conviction under PECA: 11-year sentence for online harassment

Landmark court ruling highlights digital age accountability

A landmark legal verdict in Faisalabad has set a crucial precedent in combating digital harassment, with a special court sentencing Abdul Rehman to 11 years in prison for systematically harassing a young woman online.

The Faisalabad Special Court imposed a comprehensive penalty against the perpetrator, including:

  • 11 years of imprisonment
  • Rs1 million fine
  • Rs500,000 compensation to the victim

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) filed the case under the Cyber Crime Act, specifically targeting Rehman's actions of uploading inappropriate images and persistently harassing the victim through social media platforms.

Judicial authorities emphasized that the verdict represents a critical step in protecting individuals from digital maltreatment, signaling zero tolerance for online harassment.
