More than 1,000 farmers have committed suicide in the Indian state of Maharashtra this year
In the Indian state of Maharashtra, more than a thousand farmers have committed suicide in the first 6 months of this year.
According to Indian media, 1267 farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra from January 2024 to June 2024.
According to India's National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Maharashtra accounted for 37.6% of the total number of farmer suicides across the country in 2022 as well.
NCRB said that 11 thousand 290 people related to agriculture sector committed suicide in 2022.
According to foreign media, more than 50% of India's population is based on agriculture, besides increasing farmer suicides in vast areas of the country, millions of small farmers are worried about the falling price of their crops and rising expenses.
Growing discontent in rural areas is also a challenge for the government and these suicides reflect the plight of Indian farmers.
