General elections in Bangladesh today, opposition boycott, many schools and polling booths set on fire

Polling is being held today for the general elections in Bangladesh, but the opposition parties have announced a boycott of the general elections and called for a two-day nationwide strike. The opposition parties have also appealed to the people not to vote.



The opposition boycott has paved the way for Sheikh Hasina Wajid to be elected as Prime Minister for the fifth time, the opposition parties are demanding a neutral caretaker government and the resignation of Hasina Wajid. While the international community has also expressed concern over the holding of controversial elections.

On the other hand, during the violent incidents, 5 schools and 4 polling booths were set on fire in Dhaka, while 5 people were killed and 8 injured in a fire in a passenger train last day.


The police held the opposition responsible for the incident and arrested 7 members, the opposition rejected the allegations made by the police. So far, 11,000 people, including the central leadership of the Bangladesh National Party, have been arrested, while thousands are absconding.
